On This Day in #KatyPerryHistory… 26th October 2010 Firework was released

Firework is from Katy’s third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010). Katy co-wrote the song with Ester Dean and its producers StarGate and Sandy Vee. It is a dance-pop self-empowerment anthem with inspirational lyrics, and Katy felt it was an important song for her on Teenage Dream. Capitol Records released it as the album’s third single on October 26, 2010.

The song was commercially successful, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top five on 20 charts around the world. It has sold 7.2 million copies in the United States, and over 1 million in the United Kingdom. Additionally, Firework was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for the shipment of 10 million copies across the United States.[1]An accompanying music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was released a few days later. It portrays Katy singing and dancing around Budapest, with interspersed scenes of young people becoming confident in themselves. An open casting call for the music video drew an unprecedented 38,000 applicants. On MuchMusic’s top 50 videos of 2010, Firework reached the top position. The music video was said to be a more upbeat take on Christina Aguilera’s message in Beautiful. It was nominated for three awards at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, eventually winning one of those, the Video of the Year, the main and final award. Firework was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 54th Grammy Awards. In January 2012, Firework was elected the fifth most played single on US radio during 2011 by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, with 509,000 plays.

Music Video

Katy opens the video gazing down upon the city from a balcony. As she sings into the night, fireworks burst from her soul and soon inspire young people throughout the city to overcome their fears and insecurities, in the process igniting their own fireworks. A boy confronts his arguing and fighting parents, who are upsetting his little sister, and pushes them apart. A shy overweight girl, playing the role of wallflower at a pool party, finds the courage to shed her clothes and jump in the pool with her friends. A leukemia patient at a children’s hospital proves to herself that she can show herself out on the street and in public despite her loss of hair. A teenage boy approaches his male friend in a club and kisses him on the mouth. A struggling young performer walking home in a dark alley uses tricks from his magic act to win over a group of street toughs who were trying to rob him. Soon the youth of the city are converging upon the courtyard of Buda Castle, dancing and lighting up the night with their fireworks.

On This Day in #KatyPerryHistory… 18th October 2013 Prism album was released

Prism is the fourth studio album by Katy Perry. It was released by Capitol Records on October 18, 2013. While the album was initially planned to be “darker” than her previous material, Prism ultimately became a prominently dance-inspired record. The singer worked with several past collaborators, while enlisting new producers and guest vocals. Much of Prism revolves around the themes of living in the present, relationships, and self-empowerment. Many critics praised the album’s lyrical content for being more “mature” and personal, while others considered Prism to be more formulaic than her previous material.

The album debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 286,000 copies sold, becoming Katy’s best opening week to date. The album also peaked at number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Prism became Katy’s fastest-selling album, the second best-selling album in Australia in 2013, and the second best-selling album released by a woman in the United States in 2013. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that Prism was the sixth best-selling album in the world in 2013, the best-selling album in the world in 2013 released by a woman, and labeled Katy “a global phenomenon.” It has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The album’s success continued throughout 2014, ranking within the top 10 of the annual charts for 2014 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and earned Katy a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

The release of the album was preceded by the release of two singles. Roar was released in August 2013 as the album’s lead single and topped the Billboard Hot 100. Unconditionally debuted in October 2013 as the record’s second single. In between the release of these two tracks were the releases of promotional singles Dark Horse and Walking on Air in September 2013. Dark Horse was released as the album’s third single three months later in December 2013, and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Birthday and This Is How We Do were the fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Prism was further promoted through the Prismatic World Tour.
